Glyceryl glucoside is a conjugated molecule of glycerol and glucose, and was originally found to be critical for cyanobacteria survive in extremem conditions. Recently, many scientific reports suggested the key role of glyceryl glucoside in induction of aquaporin-3 protein, which is an essential protein in water molecule transport across the skin cell membrane. Glycerol glucoside is becoming the new molecule for next generation moisturising ingredient.
- Glyceryl Glucoside (2-GG, also known as Gluco-glycerol) is a natural combination of glycerol and glucose.
- 2-GG has been used by blue-green algae to ensure their survival for 3.5 billion years.
- 2-GG has been proven to stimulate the production of Aquaporin 3 (AQP3) in human skin cells.
- Aquaporins control water transfer into and out of the cells. The more AQP3’s there are, the better the distribution of moisture within the deeper layers of skin. By stimulating skin’s own water system, 2-GG helps to maintain skin moisturised and improve barrier function.
